Success in the New Wood Competition

The results of the New Wood 2022 competition were announced on June 7 at the Pulp & Paper fair at Helsinki Exhibition Centre. The New Wood competition winners were selected through social media voting, which received nearly a thousand public votes. The goal of the public voting was to raise awareness of the wood-based materials from New Wood project member companies. The material of products participating in the competition could already be known, but the commercial product or application method had to be new.

The top three New Wood Product 2022 solutions are:

  1. From golf ball case to insect hotel — Metsä Board & Golf Coat
  2. Carbonation device from biocomposite — UPM Biocomposites & Mysoda
  3. NAMS, what a tomato box! — Pyroll Packaging Group & Agrifutura.

Pyroll Packaging was also involved in manufacturing the competition-winning package that converts into an insect hotel. The prototypes were manufactured by Pyroll’s PackageMedia unit and the final case took shape at Pyroll’s Lahti and Tampere factories.

The Nams tomato box manufactured by Pyroll’s Lahti factory achieved an excellent third place in the high-level competition.

When choosing packaging materials, solutions made from renewable natural resources should be preferred whenever possible. This is an excellent example of a future fiber-based package that replaces plastic. The windows in these boxes are wood-based biodegradable cellulose acetate. The boxes can therefore be safely recycled in cardboard recycling.

Packages should also clearly display recycling instructions, as they should be put into circulation after use. Recycling instructions can be found at a glance on this box and it is easy to recycle. This package is consumer-friendly, a conscious consumer’s choice, and supports sustainable development.
